All our Collings guitars are built with carefully selected master grade Adirondack Spruce soundboard material. From the several thousand guitar tops we produce each year, we have been saving the finest Adirondack for some very special, outstanding guitars. We chose Collings Guitars for their craftsmanship and acoustic expertise to make what we believe will be some of the most sought after, great sounding instruments in the years to come. Contact us for any special requests or custom build to order instruments as Collings offers many wood options, bindings/trim, finish, and neck widths.
As always, the soundboard provided for these guitars was selected out of some 120,000 sets we have provided for numerous guitar makers over our 18 year history. As this is a similar number to CF Martin's production of Adirondack instruments from 1833 to 1946, the 1500 sets we have set aside for these special guitars most likely represent the finest collection of Adirondack guitar soundboard ever assembled. The Rosewood was also selected on site/from the tree in Central America with the same attention to quality and detail we use in the production of our Adirondack.

* We had the opportunity to play #15439 next to a 1935 D-28 in great condition. The acoustics were identical!
Collings Prototype Adirondack/Hormigo D1A (14 Fret)-SOLD
Upgraded Adirondack top and bracing, Ribbon-figured Hormigo back and sides, 1 3/4" nut, tortoise-bound neck and headstock. Top and bracing hand selected by Old Standard Wood for ideal resonance and cosmetics.
We are proud to offer this fine guitar, the very first of its kind, exclusively from Old Standard Wood. For three years, we have been working with Hormigo determining its potential for guitar tonewood and it has consistently exceeded our expectations.
Prior to WWII, Hormigo was harvested close to extinction for its use in knife handles, and has been used in marimba tone bars in Central America for over a century. Although similar in appearance to figured Cuban Mahogany, this wood's density and stiffness is much more like Brazilian Rosewood. Consequently, the tone it produces is very Brazilian-like in character. However, this is neither a rosewood nor a mahogany.
At our recommendation, Collings has turned this wood into a masterful instrument. They do not get any better than this! With Collings' cooperation, we hope to build many more of these guitars. We have 100 sets available. Please inquire for furthur information.
Old Standard Wood is proud to be the exclusive dealer of Honduran Rosewood Collings Guitars. In our 10 years of working with this tropical hardwood, we are continually impressed with its amazing projection and ability to rival Brazilian. Oxidation Patina in Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce
We often get requests for darker toned rosewood and comments about our exceptionally white Adirondack. We specifically ask Collings to avoid the use of any stain or aging toner on our specialty guitars. We do this because we like to see the natural coloration of the wood itself. As the guitar ages, the wood will naturally darken, sometimes significantly. Many instruments made today using stain or color toners to achieve what will happen naturally, will result in extremely dark wood coloration in years to come. Staining or aging toners will not prevent the natural darkening and age patina that happens to both rosewood and spruce. Consequently, in a decade or more, wood that is artifically darkened today could become so darkened with age that you can't see the wood.
Pictured below are three examples, two of rosewood and one of a Collings D1SA. Both the rosewood and the spruce are six years old. The side by side comparisons illustrate how much darkening and color change can occur in a relatively short time. The rosewood is a comparison between the natural aging (darker) compared to the same wood that has had the outer patina of six years aging planed off. The Collings D1SA is a before and after picture 2006 compared to the present. These rosewood examples and the Collings guitar have had very little exposure to sunlight. UV Radiation/sunlight will accelerate the long term color change in wood.
